TimberOx Application Guide
The preparation process should be followed to ensure adequate penetration, coloration and optimum performance of this product. Proper surface preparation is an important factor in the ultimate performance and look of coatings on wood surfaces.
Surface Preparation
All surfaces to be stained should be thoroughly cleaned (free of any other prior coatings or stains), and free of mold or mildew prior to the application of Timber Ox Wood Protectant Stain. Timber Ox must be allowed to penetrate the wood for optimum performance.
To be sure there is nothing to prevent Timber Ox from penetrating, test the wood by sprinkling water on the surface. If all the water is absorbed into the wood, Timber Ox will be able to penetrate into the surface of the wood. If the water beads on the surface of the wood or if the surface has an uneven color from prior coatings, a paint/stain stripper or sanding may be required to remove any other pre-existing coatings, sealers, paints, stains, preservatives, etc. If Timber Ox is applied over another coating, sealer, paint, stain etc., the wood surface may become tacky, blotchy or discolored.
Clean surface by gently power washing or cleaning with deck cleaner.
If mold/mildew/fungus/algae are present, treat wood surface with mold/mildew treatment prior to staining. Follow instructions on treatment and rinse off thoroughly
If wood has been stripped, a neutralizer must be used to stop the caustic action of the stripper prior to coating. Follow instructions on stripper for neutralizing.
If sanding has been performed or if the wood is new, it is recommended to open the wood pores by using a wood brightener such as oxalic acid.
After cleaning, use a wood brightener such as oxalic acid to open the pores of the wood and clean nail bleeds and discolored areas. Rinse thoroughly.
Once the surfaces of the wood have been prepared, the wood needs to thoroughly dry. A moisture content of 15% or below is optimal for stain application. If the moisture content is too high, the wood will not accept the stain very well.
Prior to staining, tape and tarp off perimeter area to protect against spills, over spray or drips on surfaces that are not being stained.
Before using stain perform a trial brush-out in an inconspicuous area to ensure the desired color is achieved. Replace rotted, extremely weathered or warped wood. This product will not repair existing wood damage such as cracking, checking, splintering, or splitting.
Application
Apply two wet on wet coats of Timber Ox Green Wood Protectant stain to the wood surfaces. Apply the product when the temperature is above 60°F and when no precipitation is expected for 24 hours. To prevent premature evaporation, do not apply to wood that is hot to touch or in direct sunlight.
Apply with a natural or synthetic bristle brush, stain pad, ½” nap stain roller, airless sprayer, or dip for at least 3 minutes.
When spraying, make sure to back brush along the grain to remove any drips and ensure even coverage and to remove any puddles.
Do not over saturate surface with stain or allow puddles. Dry brush, dry roll or wipe excess off surface 30 minutes after application to avoid shiners, tackiness, excessive dry time or uneven appearance.
Apply second coat within 1 hour of first coat for horizontal surfaces and within 6 hours for vertical surfaces. Do not allow to dry fully between coats. This product must penetrate the surface to work properly. The second coat will take approximately one half the amount of stain of the first coat.
Clean-up over sprays, drips or splashes with citrus-based cleaner or mineral spirits immediately.
Dry Time
Allow a minimum of 24 – 48 hours before walking on deck. Wait 72 hours to reposition furniture on wood surfaces.
Clean-up
Clean brushes with hot soapy water, citrus cleaner or mineral spirits.
Maintenance
Semi-annual cleaning with mild soap and water using a broom or brush to scrub the wood surface is recommended. This may be needed more often in areas where dirt and debris gather on the wood surface.
