AFM Safechoice Carpet Care System

AFM Safechoice Carpet Care System

Introduction

Traditional carpet contains anywhere from 600 to 1200 chemicals that can off gas for the 20 years or more!
Sure…new carpet will have that “aroma” for weeks after installation.
But once that goes away, the carpet will continue to release low level toxins (enough to kill lab rats in testing) for years.

We realize that in most situations, removing the carpet is impossible. So the next best thing you can do is treat it with the AFM Carpet Care system.

This consists of three steps.

Step 1 is to Shampoo the carpet to remove oils, greases, clipping from manufacturing and residual toxins left over from previous cleanings.

Steps 2 and 3 are the application of the AFM Carpet Seal and Lock Out– the seal to encapsulate the plastic backing, and Lock Out for the fibers.

Yes, its time consuming and labor intensive however,
proper application of this system
will reduce the off gassing by as much as 90%,
at a material cost of around 25 cents per square foot.

Carpet Shampoo

Coverage– 1:8 ratio with water (1 pint of carpet shampoo to 1 gallon of water) 1 gallon of the carpet shampoo mixture will cover approximately 300 square feet. Use a higher or lower concentration based on your needs.

    • Apply mixture with a garden sprayer or a carpet shampooer.
    • Let soak for 5-10 minutes.
    • Extract with a wet/dry shop vac or a carpet shampooer on an extraction setting.

Carpet Seal

(this is the most important and labor intensive step)

Coverage- 300 square feet per gallon.

    • While the carpet is still damp, apply the Carpet Seal using the garden sprayer. Do not dilute, Carpet Seal is ready to use.
    • Scrub in the Carpet Seal using a clean, heavy bristle garage broom. We recommend  using a heavy, natural bristled broom.
    • Once the Carpet Seal has been brushed vigorously down the fiber to the plastic backing, wrap the broom head with clean, large towels. Thoroughly scrub the surface of the carpet until the fibers are dry.

(Be advised: If the Carpet Seal is not completely removed from the fibers, a white, salt like film can develop which will make the fiber stiff. This can be removed by starting over and re-shampooing)

Carpet Lock Out

Coverage- 300 square feet per gallon.

    • Once the carpet is completely dry from the first 2 steps, Carpet Lock Out can be applied using the garden sprayer. The Lock Out is ready to use, and does not require dilution.
    • Apply the Lock Out to the surface of the carpet fibers and allow to dry without traffic or disruption.
    • 12-24 hour cure time DEPENDENT on humidity, temperature and air movement. Large fans and air flow are recommended to promote faster cure time.

IMPORTANT:

The effectiveness of this system will vary depending on carpet style, application methods, and how closely you follow these instructions. When in doubt, ask for professional recommendations. Expect an 80-95% reduction in toxic outgassing when done properly.
