Q: We are working with an architect who has spec’d the Polyureseal BP Gloss to use on the courthouse floor . They need to know specifically that the product must build a dry film thickness of 1.0 mils, so in your expert opinion, what would it take to meet this spec?
A: The Dry Film thickness (DFM) of the finish is what is left after the water has evaporated and the product is cured. In order to determine what the DFM is, you need to know the % of solids in the liquid product. Poly BP has a solids content of approx 33%. When Poly BP is applied to the surface, 67% of the liquid will either evaporate or become part of the film. The rest of this answer might be a bit more confusing...
Application rate for Poly BP is 400 sq.ft per gallon-average
1600/400= 4 WET FILM MILS (why 1600 you ask? That’s just the multiplier you use for this calculation)
4 WFM x 33% SOLIDS = 1.32 DFM
So, each coat of Poly BP will achieve 1.32 DFM
We recommend three coats of Poly BP on wood floors, so your total thickness will be approx 4 DFM.
